About Valerie

valerie jordan painter gloucestershire

As a practitioner , my roots are in the tradition of landscape  and still life paintings . In my work this representational skills base is allied with a conceptual approach to research and contextualisation of my practise as a painter in relationship to a concern with both the decorative and the rigorously formal.

I am interested in the ways in which Eastern Carpet design employs a range of modes of representation. Realism and mythology co-exist simultaneously on the same plane.

My recent work has involved drawing painting printing, and sewing in direct response to the landscape of Miami, where I lived and worked for a few years before recently returning to the Cotswolds. I layer, superimpose and repeat details from studies of shimmering water and marine life, fish, shells flowers, etc. within structures that echo both Eastern carpet design and formal grid of the city. I regard these “landmarks”, natural and man-made as equally transient.
